Why it matters

Pool and Water Feature Lighting in Texas

In Texas, the pool gets most of its use after the sun goes down, so pool and water feature lighting does more for the backyard than almost anything else.

Water is one of the most rewarding things to light. It moves, reflects and glows, and a single well-placed fixture in a fountain or waterfall can carry a whole view. But a lit pool sitting in a dark yard looks like a hole in the night; the magic happens when the water, the trees behind it and the deck around it are lit as one scene.

Landscape Lighting Texas designs the light around and inside water features together with the surrounding landscape, so the pool, patio, plantings and paths share consistent color and can be dimmed or switched as zones.

Techniques

How We Light Pools and Water Features

Most backyards use several of these together, balanced so the water is the brightest element without overpowering the rest.

Submerged accent lights

Low-voltage submersible fixtures placed in fountains, ponds and spill basins and aimed up through moving water. Falling water catches the light and sparkles; still water glows from within.

Waterfall & sheer-descent lighting

A fixture tucked behind or beneath a waterfall lip, or a linear light under a sheer descent, so the sheet of water turns into a ribbon of light.

Backdrop & reflection lighting

Uplighting trees, palms and walls beyond the pool so they reflect in the surface. This gives the backyard depth and makes the pool feel larger.

Deck, coping & step lights

Low, shielded fixtures in walls, steps and raised beds make the edge of the deck and changes in level visible, without lighting the pool area like a commercial facility.

Moonlighting the deck

Downlights high in nearby trees wash the deck with soft, dappled light. It is the most natural-looking way to light a swimming and lounging area.

Scenes & color

Warm white for everyday evenings, with color scenes for parties if you want them. Zoned controls let the pool area stay on late while the front yard turns off. See smart lighting.

Texas considerations

Pool Lighting for Texas Backyards

  • Long outdoor season: pools here are used from spring into fall, often late at night when it finally cools down, so the lighting gets real use.
  • Heat and sun: LEDs and sealed fixtures handle Texas summers; we keep drivers and transformers shaded where possible.
  • Hard water and chemicals: brass, stainless and sealed lenses resist mineral scale and splash-out; water feature fixtures are easy to reach for cleaning.
  • Coastal salt air: in Galveston, Corpus Christi and along the Gulf Coast, salt is hard on metals, so we use brass, copper and stainless only.
  • Storms and debris: fixtures are anchored firmly so wind, heavy rain and hail do not knock them out of aim.

Comfort & glare

Light You Can Relax In

Pool areas are where people sit, float and look around, often from low angles. That makes glare control critical. We keep fixtures out of sightlines from loungers and the water, shield lamps, and keep levels low enough that you can still see the stars.

Color temperature matters too: warm 2700K around the deck feels relaxed and flatters skin and stone, while slightly crisper 3000K on palms and foliage keeps greens vivid. Color-changing fixtures are available for parties; we usually recommend warm white as the everyday scene.

Curious what it costs to run? LED systems use roughly 75–80% less energy than halogen. Compare with the energy savings calculator.

Our process

How a Pool & Water Feature Project Works

  1. Free dusk consultation

We see the pool, water features and surrounding yard at nightfall from the house, the deck and the water, and talk through how you use the space in the evening.

  2. Custom design

You receive a plan covering water features, backdrop trees, deck and step lights, with zones and controls, plus an itemized quote. Many pool projects pair with patio and outdoor living lighting.

  3. Expert installation

Licensed, insured installers set fixtures, transformers and cable with care for decking, coping and plantings. On new pools we can plan conduit and fixture locations before the deck is poured.

  4. Reveal & tune

After dark we balance the water, backdrop and deck lighting with you and set your scenes. All work carries our 5-year workmanship warranty.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you replace the lights inside my pool?

Lights built into the pool shell are part of the pool equipment and its bonding system, so changes to them are pool electrical work. Our focus is the lighting around and in your water features (fountains, ponds, waterfalls) and the landscape around the pool, designed to work with your existing pool lights.

Is low-voltage lighting safe near a pool?

Yes, when it is designed and installed properly. Low-voltage 12V fixtures are the standard choice around pools, with transformers placed outside the required distance from the water and all connections sealed.

Can water feature lights change color?

Yes. Color-changing fixtures are available for fountains and ponds and can be controlled from an app. Most homeowners use warm white day to day and save color for special occasions.

How do you keep fountain lights clean?

Mineral scale and algae build up on submerged lenses over time, especially with hard Texas water. We place fixtures where they are easy to reach and include lens cleaning in our maintenance service.

Should I add lighting while my pool is being built?

If you can, yes. Planning conduit and fixture locations before decking and coping go in makes the installation cleaner and avoids cutting new work later. Call us early in the pool project.
