Security & Floodlighting

Security lighting for Texas homes and businesses that improves visibility where it counts, at entries, drives, side yards and parking areas, using shielded floodlights and motion zones instead of harsh, blinding glare.

Security Lighting That Protects Without Looking Like a Parking Lot

The goal of security lighting is visibility: being able to see who is at the door, what is moving along the fence line and where the step is. Most poorly lit properties do not have too little light; they have one overpowering floodlight that blinds cameras, neighbors and anyone trying to see past it, while deep shadows sit just outside its beam.

Landscape Lighting Texas designs security and floodlighting as part of the whole property. We eliminate dark pockets with even, layered light, keep fixtures shielded and aimed down, and add motion-activated zones that brighten when something moves. The result reads as a well-kept property at night, not a fortress.

Techniques

How We Design Effective Security Lighting

Good security lighting follows the same principles as good landscape lighting: control glare, light vertical surfaces and avoid harsh contrast.

Shielded floodlights

Fully shielded, downward-aimed floods cover drives, side yards and lots. Light lands on the ground and walls, not in the eyes of people or cameras.

Motion zones

Low-level light stays on all night; motion sensors bring specific zones to full output. The change in brightness draws attention without lighting the property at full power for hours.

Entry & facade light

Lit walls, doors and windows make it easy to see faces and figures. Uplighting the facade removes the shadows next to the house where people can stand unseen.

Paths, drives & gates

Even, low-glare path and drive lighting means no dark gaps between the street and the door, and safer footing for residents and visitors.

Camera-friendly light

Steady, even light with consistent color gives security cameras better images than a single glaring flood that washes out the frame and leaves the edges black.

Smart schedules

Dusk-to-dawn base levels, motion boosts and an “away” scene that varies which zones are on, managed from an app with smart controls.

Who we light

Security Lighting for Homes and Commercial Properties

The principles are the same; the priorities change with the property.

Residential

Front entries, garages, driveways, side yards, back gates and pool areas. We blend security zones into your landscape lighting so the house looks beautiful at 9pm and well protected at 2am.

  • Entry and porch visibility
  • Driveway and garage floods
  • Side-yard and fence-line coverage
  • Motion-activated back gates

Commercial & community

Properties where many people come and go after dark, and where consistent, low-maintenance lighting matters as much as appearance.

  • HOA entrances & amenities
  • Retail centers
  • Office parks
  • Multifamily communities
  • Hotels & hospitality
  • Monument signs

For commercial and community properties, we look beyond the fixtures. Parking areas, breezeways, mail kiosks, pool gates and dumpster enclosures each need steady, glare-free light; monument signs and entry landscaping need to look inviting to residents, guests and customers. We favor durable LED fixtures with long service lives and consistent color, so replacements match and maintenance stays predictable. For HOAs, retail, offices, multifamily and hospitality sites, we can also coordinate schedules with managers, phase work across budget cycles and set up ongoing maintenance so lights stay working.

Before and After: Security Lighting Done Right

Texas conditions

Security Lighting Built for Texas Weather

  • Hail and wind: metal-bodied fixtures with tempered glass lenses, mounted securely on eaves, walls and poles.
  • Heat: LED floods with proper heat sinking and drivers rated for high ambient temperatures, since security lights run longer hours than any other zone.
  • Storms and outages: controls that recover their schedule after a power interruption, so lights come back on at dusk without a reset.
  • Humidity and salt air: sealed, IP-rated fixtures and corrosion-resistant finishes for Houston and the Gulf Coast.
  • Clay and caliche soil: post-mounted and in-ground fixtures set on stable bases so shifting soil doesn’t knock them out of aim.

Compliance

HOAs, Neighbors and Dark-Sky Practice

Many Texas HOAs and city codes limit light trespass and glare. Shielded fixtures aimed down, warm color temperatures and motion-activated zones keep security lighting effective while staying within typical deed restrictions. For HOA common areas and commercial sites, we plan fixtures and schedules around the association’s or owner’s requirements.

LED floods use roughly 75–80% less energy than halogen equivalents, which matters for lights that run every night of the year. Commercial and community clients also appreciate fewer lamp replacements and service calls.

How it works

Our Security Lighting Process

Four steps, planned at night when security lighting actually matters.

  1. Free dusk consultation

We walk the property after dark with you or your property manager, note dark zones, glare problems, camera locations and entry points, and discuss HOA or tenant requirements.

  2. Custom design

You receive a plan showing base-level lighting, motion zones and floodlight locations, with an itemized quote. Commercial sites can be phased.

  3. Expert installation

Licensed, insured technicians install and wire fixtures, sensors and controls, scheduling around residents, tenants or business hours.

  4. Reveal & tune

We return after dark to aim every fixture, set sensor ranges and timeouts, and check what your cameras see.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does outdoor lighting actually improve security?

Good lighting improves visibility for residents, neighbors, passersby and cameras, and removes the dark spots where someone could go unnoticed. No lighting plan guarantees security, but even, well-aimed light is a practical part of protecting a property.

Are motion-sensor lights better than lights that stay on?

The most effective approach usually combines both: a low base level from dusk to dawn so the property is never fully dark, plus motion-activated zones that brighten when something moves.

What color temperature is best for security lighting?

For homes we typically use 3000K, which matches landscape lighting and renders faces and colors well. For commercial parking and service areas, up to 4000K can be appropriate. We avoid very cool, blue-white light because it increases perceived glare.

Do you install security lighting for HOAs and businesses?

Yes. We light HOA entrances and amenities, retail centers, office properties, multifamily communities and hospitality properties across Texas, and can plan work in phases to fit budgets and operating hours.

Can security lighting be added to my existing landscape lighting?

Often, yes, as a separate zone on the same system or on its own circuit for line-voltage floods. We check transformer capacity and wiring first. Our maintenance and repair service also handles upgrades to older systems of any brand.
